The spoils of our toils.

Writer's picture: Justin Justin

As the dawn of another lion season greets us, it’s a moment to reflect on both our triumphs and the road ahead. This year, we begin with gratitude in our hearts, having successfully defended our hunting rights in the face of great adversity. Together, we’ve shown the strength of our community, the value of our traditions, and the critical role we play in responsible wildlife stewardship.

Yet, even as we celebrate, we must remain vigilant. There are still individuals and groups working at the wildlife commission level to chip away at our rights and undermine the heritage we hold dear. The battle for our way of life is far from over, and the responsibility lies with each of us to show our commitment to conservation and ethical hunting practices.

One meaningful way we can contribute this season is by being more mindful of our lion harvests. Last year saw a higher-than-average take of female lions, around 47%. To ensure the sustainability of the species and to demonstrate our role as stewards of wildlife, we encourage everyone to be selective in their harvests this year. Reducing the number of female lions harvested will not only aid in maintaining a healthy lion population, while likely extending our season but also serve as a powerful testament to our ability to selectively harvest and self regulate. Something that has been topic of conversation quite heavily at the wildlife commission.

Hound hunting is more than a tradition; it is a passion and a responsibility. By practicing restraint and making thoughtful decisions in the field, we protect not only the wildlife we revere but also the future of this cherished way of life. Our actions this season will speak louder than words, showing decision-makers and the broader community that we are not only hunters but also conservationists deeply committed to preserving wildlife for generations to come.

As we embark on this season, let us celebrate our victories, honor the incredible bond we share with our hounds, the land and its creatures. Together, we can ensure that lion hunting continues to be a respected and vital part of our outdoor heritage.

Thank you for your dedication, passion, and commitment to doing what is right. Let’s make this lion season one we can be proud of—for ourselves, for our community, and for the wildlife we love.'

Stay safe, hunt ethically, and protect the legacy.

Sincerely, Justin Angelovich
